NEW LIGHT ON SINKING
Hope for Mareeba Men Gone
MELBOURNE. Thursday.
Sixteen men from the steamer Mareeba are presumed to have been drowned in the North Sea last January, when a German submarine by mistake sunk a German prison ship carrying Mareeba survivors to Germany. The Mareeba was sunk or captured by a German raider in the Bay of Bengal last year. The 16 men are among 25 not accounted for in a prisoner of war list for the Mareeba, issued in April by the marine branch of the Department of Commerce. The other nine men whose names were not published in that list, are presumed to have lost their lives after escaping in a life-boat from the sinking prison ship.
RED CROSS INQUIRIES.
At the request of the marine branch, the International Red Cross sought the permission of the German authorities to consult the chief officer of the Mareeba. Mr. B J. Freeman who was in a German prison camp, as to the fate of the men unaccounted for. In a statement issued to-day the marine branch stated that the German authorities appeared to have placed no obstacle in the way of the Red Cross inquiries, and Mr. Freeman was enabled to furnish important information, from which the partially complete story has been built up.
After the sinking or capture of the Mareeba the crew were apparently transferred by the German raider believed to be the Kormoran, later sunk by H.M.A.S. Sydney- to a prisonship, which headed to Germany.
Two of the crew died from natural causes at sea They were C. Gunderson, A.B., who died on October 16 1941, and A. Mathieson, trimmer, who died on December 31.
When the prison ship was sunk in the North Sea, Mr. Freeman states that the following men must have been drowned:
B Anderson, first engineer- J. Gordon, second engineer - K. MacCowan, fifth engineer- M. Rodgers, second mate- D. Long, third mate- N. Currie - second radio operator R. Holmes - third radio operator - J.Macadam. A.B - J. Lucas. A.B - G. Ford, O.S. - C. Keegan, chief steward - R. J. Bradley, trimmer- W. Brown fireman- W. O'Toole, fireman - H. Martin fireman - A. Mackay, greaser.
Mr. Freeman said that he and his party were rescued by the submarine which then unsuccessfully searched for a boat in which the following men had left the sinking prison ship: Captain Skinner; J. Riley, fourth engineer - G. Humphry, A.B. - D. Evans. A.B.- D. Kitchen, deck boy - M. M Gill. P. Gannon, firemen - C. Bentley, second-grade steward.
These men were last, seen on February 1, and the Department of Commerce states that there can now be no doubt they lost their lives.

Wheatbelt Tribune & Koorda Record (Wyalkatchem, W.A.) 1-5-1942
Two Brothers Victims of Nazi Raider.
The following is taken from "The Mail," Adelaide, of December 6, and is of interest to this district, as Mr. and Mrs. Kitchen are well known in this district, Mr. Kitchin having been manager of the Wyalkatchem
branch of the National Bank until last year.
"Two brothers, on separate boats, are among victims of the German raider Kormoran. One, it is hoped, maybe alive still. "They are Stoker Clayton Peter Kitchin (21) from H.M.A.S. Sydney, and David Kitchin (17), deck boy on the cargo ship Mareeba. They are sons of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kitchin, of Kadina. Mr. Kitchin is branch manager of the National Bank.
The death of Stoker Kitchin is presumed, along with other members of the crew of the Sydney, which sank the Kormoran.
"But Mr. and Mrs. Kitchin still hold hopes that their other son is alive. David joined the Mareeba for -one trip abroad to gain experience and fill in time till he became old enough to join the navy. He left Fremantle in May last. "Mr. Kitchin said at Kadina today that there was every possibility that David, with the crew of the Mareeba, was transferred from the Kormoran to another German vessel. "Both boys were very good swimmers, Mr Kitchin said. David had been a good athlete at school in Western Australia, and was a prefect." The friends of Mr .and Mrs. Kitchin will, we know, join in hoping that the boys may yet be found.
Wheatbelt Tribune & Koorda Record (Wyalkatchem, W.A.) 3-7-1942
Mr. and Mrs. C. Kitchin have received the following information regarding their son David, a member of the crew of the S.S. Mareeba, an Australian cargo boat which was sunk by the German raider Kormoran in the North Indian Ocean, enroute from Tegal to Calcutta, early in July, 1941: "International Red Cross Committee cabled prisoners of War Information Bureau, Australia, that Freeman, Chief Officer, Mareeba, now prisoner in Germany, advised that enemy vessel on which David Kitchin was prisoner, was sunk North Atlantic January 31, 1942, and your son last seen in well equipped lifeboat Feb. 1. Submarine which rescued Freeman subsequently unsuccessfully searched for this lifeboat which he therefore considers lost."
