S.S. Tasman was sunk on 16 September 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-46 - approximately 220 nautical miles North by West of Cape Villano. She was en route from London to Calcutta.

CAPTAIN AND OFFICERS MISSING.
SYDNEY, Monday
It is stated that the steamer Tasman which,until taken over recently, by the Federal Government was running under, the Dutch Flag,- was torpedoed in European waters on September 16.
The following - are reported missing: Captain Reid, the chief officer, Mr. Preston; the second officer, Mr. Crowther; 'Able Seamen Farrell, Hagon and Lennox; Stewards Jackson and Baker. All the foregoing signed articles in Australia. There were four other casualties. The survivors reached Allied territory.
