S.S. Ascot was a 7,004 GRT steam cargo ship that was torpedoed on 29 February 1944 by Japanese submarine I-37 in the Indian Ocean whilst on a voyage from Colombo to Diego Suarez. The crew took to the boats and the ship was sunk by gunfire. The Captain was taken aboard the submarine for interrogation and then thrown overboard. The submarine then rammed and machine-gunned the boats and rafts. Eight survivors were eventually picked up by the Dutch ship Straat Soenda. - benjidog.co.uk
