S.S. IRON KNIGHT (Melbourne)
In early February 1943, a ten-ship merchant convoy under escort was en route Melbourne-Newcastle, the leading vessel being Iron Knight, fully laden with iron ore. Off Eden on the new South Wales coast, she was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I.21, sinking immediately. Crew lost totaled thirty-six and included the Master. Fourteen survivors, recovered from a raft, were taken to Sydney.

ON TORPEDOED SHIP A young Coonamble man to lose his life a few months ago when the ship on which he was serving was torpedoed in Australian waters, is Henry Francis Hodgman (20), son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Hodgman, , "Penally," Gulargambone. Enlisting about three years ago in the Merchant Navy deceased was in America nine months and on his return joined an Australian line. A Proprietary Shipping Coy. A highly popular lad in Coonamble when attending; St. Brigid's Convent School, Henry's many friends will, deeply regret his passing as such an early ago. His brother (Bernard), of the A.I.F., was last heard of at Malaya, while another brother (James), also of the A.I.F., is a prisoner in a Germany War Hospital. |
