RON ("BOOTS") GANNAWAY
Many Longreach people, who knew Ron ("Boots") Gannaway, will regret to learn of the official announcement of his death at Anioma, Milne Bay, New Guinea, with a naval patrol of the United States Navy.
After his discharge last year from the Australian Military Forces, Ron, 'who was a native of Victoria, and who had enlisted at the age of 15 years, came out to Longreach when for a short period he was employed by the Graziers' Association of Central and Northern Queensland and Gordon Gibson & Co. Returning to Brisbane, Ron was accepted for special service with the U.S. Navy, and official advice of his death has come to hand; Rev. W. R.W. Roberts receiving a letter from the American authorities during the week which stated that Ron had been killed at Milne Bay and was buried on 21st March, 1944. Ron Gannaway, better known by his friends as "Boots" was a likeable, unassuming fellow and while in Longreach resided at the Palace Hotel. He suffered a severe handicap with acute deafness.

Francis Guise, a young half caste member of the Australian Board of Missions staff in New Guinea recently died of wounds received in action while serving as an engineer in a merchantman.
He died at sea while being brought to hospital in Australia, and his name has been placed on the honour roll of the Australian Board of Missions.

Just before setting out on the voyage during which he was wounded Guise was highly commended by the O.C. of the New Guinea Force for being instrumental in saving the life of an airman whose plane had crashed into the sea near his ship. Guise noticed the plane crash and drew the master's attention to it. The course of the ship was altered and the airman was rescued.

Former amateur wrestler and prominent North Bondi surfer, Captain John George Norburn, has died in New Guinea. He was attached to the United States Small Ships section.
For some years he was captain in charge of the Great Barrier Reef expeditions and conducted parties led by Zane Grey, the Vanderbilts, Rothschilds and British scientific expeditions.
It is knowledge of that region led him to join the US Small Ships.
The Norburn brothers are a well-known wrestling family. Ben won the State amateur heavy weight title, turned professional and won the Australian heavy weight championship under the name of Joe Dawson.
Arthur was amateur runner-up for some years in NSW and won a title double in Queensland. As well as being surf club members at North Bondi, the Norburn brothers played football with the club.
