CAPTAIN W. MICHIE
KILLED AT DARWIN
Captain William Michie. 56, who was killed by enemy action at Darwin on February 19, was well known to Australian tourists. Joining Burns, Philpp, and Co. Ltd.in 1917, he commanded most of their steamers between Australia and the Pacific Islands. These included the Maesina, Mataram, Morinda, Montoro and Macdhui. Captain Michie effected a remarkable rescue when in command of the Macdhui.
Miss Nell Buckingham 27, a Paddington NS.W. school teacher, was missed when the vessel was off Sandy Cape. The captain ordered the vessel to be turned back. Two and a half hours later, after 17 miles had been covered Miss Buckingham was found floating. She was conscious, although suffering from sunburn and immersion. Captain Michie was in command of the Montoro during the volcanic eruption at Rabaul. He took off 5000 people, including natives, without a mishap.
