HMAT Afric was torpedoed by German submarine UC-66 on 12 February causing major damage and the death of the engineers and greasers who were on duty at the time. The rest of the crew escaped in boats and the submarine sank the ship by gunfire at position 49° 59' N, 04° 18' W. She had been en route from Liverpool to Devonport and Sydney with a general cargo.
