NEWCASTLE VICTIMS OF JAP. SUB
SYDNEY. — Three Newcastle men were amongst those who lost their lives when an Allied freighter was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine within a few hours' steaming of Melbourne. They were:-- Rodney Scott, 19. apprentice, of Mayfield- John Anthony, fireman, of Morgan street, Newcastle -Harvey Rowley, AB, of Hamilton South. Newcastle.
Survivors did not see the submarine at any stage of the attack, although men on another ship saw the feathery wake of the torpedo a few seconds before the explosion. As far as survivors could recall, the three men were not sighted as the freighter was sinking She was going so fast that they had no chance to launch the life boats. The ten men who escaped just managed to jump into the moderate sea that was running and cling to wreckage until a rescue vessel reached them an hour and a quarter afterwards.
